Best RC Crawler Shocks and Suspension

Most 1/10 crawler builders start with 30 to 50 weight silicone oil for a balanced ride on mixed trail terrain. Lighter oil (20 weight or below) gives more suspension travel and better rock wrap but can feel mushy. Heavier oil (60 to 80 weight) firms up the stroke and helps on high-speed descents but reduces articulation. Change one shock at a time to feel the difference before committing to a full refill.

Fixed-length aluminum shocks at the correct travel for your platform are sufficient for 95 percent of trail crawling. Adjustable ride-height shocks add value when you switch between terrain types or compete on courses with specific clearance rules. For backyard and trail use, buy properly sized fixed units and spend the saved money on a good foam insert or servo upgrade instead.

Scale links, also called suspension links or panhard rods, connect the axles to the chassis and set the suspension geometry. Plastic links, where fitted, can flex under load, which changes your caster and pinion angle mid-obstacle and causes inconsistent steering. Aluminum or steel links hold geometry under side loads and on steep off-camber sections. They are a meaningful upgrade once you have good shocks already fitted.

Shock mounting angle and position affect droop, compression travel, and how far each wheel can drop independently. Moving the shock to the inner mount hole on most platforms increases droop. Lower shock towers reduce shock angle and soften the effective spring rate. Start with the manufacturer's recommended position and move one end at a time while watching how the opposite wheel reacts on an uneven surface before locking anything in.
